Fire Station Creative is a vibrant hub bringing life to the centre of Dunfermline, Fife.

The venue opened its doors for the first time in July 2015 and has been embraced by the community ever since.

It is set up as a charity with a trading subsidiary and all profits made are gifted to the charity to lease and maintain the building.

As a result, there are 21 studios where 30 artists work on a daily basis – painters, printmakers, jewellers, sculptors, tailors, photographers, upcyclers, upholsterers and graphic artists are based here. They are all at different stages of their creative journey – some well established and running successful small businesses, others just starting out. Many of them offer classes and workshops on a regular basis either in the studio or in the classroom.

There’s an art therapy studio that therapists can use free of charge courtesy of The Mary Leishman Foundation. User groups range from children to adults to whom therapy is helpful for a variety of reasons.

There’s a classroom that hosts art classes for young and old as well as yoga, pilates and mindfulness.

The gallery on the ground floor offers a wide ranging programme of exhibitions changing monthly. And there’s a buzzing café and bar that serves brunch, lunch, cakes and at the weekend the very popular sharing platters often to the accompaniment of live music.

It’s inspiring to see this burst of creativity and forward thinking thriving in Fife. This weekend there is a rare opportunity to see all around this iconic building when the normally private work spaces will be open to the public. Visitors will have the chance to meet the makers, see the studios and pick up some unique Christmas presents.

Husband and wife team, Chalk, are determined to revitalise a traditional skill that has fallen into relative obscurity.

Steven and Ffion Blench specialise in ornamental plasterwork and have been involved in numerous prestigious restoration projects including Stirling Castle, Blair Atholl Castle and The Assembly Rooms in Edinburgh. They are currently working for a private client, reinstating ornate cornicing in a run down manor house.

Their craftsmanship is exemplary and has been put to use in a stunning new collection of contemporary plasterwork – for walls or ceilings. The design is really relevant to today’s interior trends and the execution admirable.

Some of their work is currently on display at Fire Station Creative, Dunfermline, until 2 October 2016. The exhibition, Future Heritage has examples of work through the ages including a piece by Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

ROCKSTAR READY TO UNVEIL DEBUT EXHIBITION

AT FIRE STATION CREATIVE, DUNFERMLINE

FRI 8 - SUN 31 JULY

The Dunfermline based, contemporary arts venue, Fire Station Creative, is set to host the first ever solo exhibition by Skids frontman, Richard Jobson.

Visitors to the gallery will be treated to a thought provoking display of photographs and video projections inspired by the landscapes of the rockstar’s native Fife. The title of the show, ‘LAND, SEA AND SKY’, is a line borrowed from the Skids’ hit song, ‘INTO THE VALLEY’.

“My earliest memories are of walking the hills above the mining village of Ballingary and along shorelines from Aberdour to St Andrews. Some of my happiest childhood days were spent participating in the natural theatre of this incredible environment.” says Richard.

Promoter Thomas Moffat of 'Visit Dunfermline' says, “…We’ve been planning this exhibition for some time. There’s no doubt, it’ll make a massive splash in the region. Already the interest has been phenomenal. Its a nice reminder of just how culturally rich Dunfermline is.”

As a late addition, the title of the exhibition itself has now been wrought in neon lettering which will be hung within the gallery space of the old Art Deco fire station. This installation, three metres long, will offer the public a taste of what’s to come, for Jobson is currently working up plans to erect an even larger version of the same sculpture at one of the main outdoor entry points into Fife.

“Although the finer details are yet to be hammered out, we’re very excited to help Richard realise his vision. This elegant concept for a public art installation will speak to people on many different levels. Although it starkly declares the core elements of the Fife landscape - LAND, SEA AND SKY - the vivid neon sign, set upon a hillside, will evoke Fife’s culture with an edginess typical of this artist’s work. The display at the Fire Station is the first chance people will have to see a concept which will inevitably unfold into an even more prominent artwork in the future” says gallery curator, Ian Moir.

The exhibition will run from the 8th - 31st of July

Free entry.

Fire Station Creative opened in a blaze of glory in July 2015 when John Byrne did the honours and cut the ribbon.

This is a groundbreaking project - kick started by a group of local volunteers, working closely with Fife Council to adopt a new approach to old properties and is now a thriving creative hub in the centre of Dunfermline town.

The hub accommodates 20 studios, an art therapy studio, a classroom, a gallery and a cafe.

The ambition is to support artists at every step of their journey - from inspiration to creation and so far the existence of the building seems to be facilitating just that.

The 5th exhibition which is by the Dunfermline Fife Printmakers Workshop is just being hung, the residents are warming up for a weekend of open studios, the teachers using the classroom are polishing their students work, local high school students will be hanging their final year work and groups using the art therapy studio are displaying their services. It promises to be vibrant!

As if that wasn't enough, Arbikie - a local distillery in Arbroath that grow their own ingredients for their gin and vodka will be serving at the bar on Friday night. Gin with blueberries and a twist of lemon - delicious! The Real Hot Chocolate Company will be launching their range of artisan products - madagascan chocolate in a variety of blends - from milky sweet to 100% pure espresso shot. Chocoholics beware.

The weekend starts at 6pm on Friday 27 November - come and join us!

SCOTLAND'S NEWEST CREATIVE HUB

TO BE OPENED BY

JOHN BYRNE

ON 10 JULY 2015

OPEN TO THE PUBLIC 11 JULY 2015

What a week for Fife! Fire Station Creative are delighted to announce that Scotland's newest creative hub in Dunfermline, Fife, will be opened by John Byrne at a celebration on Friday 10 July.

This brand new facility is the product of years of voluntary work by a small group of like-minded people. The result is the recent renovation of a former fire station, which had been lying empty for five years, a listed building on the 'at risk register'. The building was originally designed and built by a local architect James Shearer in 1934. It is currently owned by Fife Council, which has agreed to rent it at a peppercorn rate. The Fire Station has served its people well over the years. The energy and admiration is alive in the building to this day.

Fire Station Creative is a charity and social enterprise that was set up to renovate the building and operate it as a creative hub. Dunfermline is a fast growing city with a population of 79,000 but limited cultural facilities. There is a vibrant creative community here but many of its members go elsewhere to work and seldom return. The facility provides 21 studio spaces, a classroom, a gallery and a café aiming to support creative people at every step of their journey as well as inspire the younger creative community.

The studios are already fully booked and artists are moving in and setting up their working spaces. They include a variety of disciplines at a range of stages in their career – painters, print makers, photographers, graphic designers, upholsterer, jewellers, tailors and conceptual artists – students and established professionals.

There is a studio dedicated to art therapy where local therapy groups can access a space free of charge and offer their clients a consistent and community based venue to work from.

There is a classroom which will be rented out by the hour and offer drawing and painting classes alongside design and craft classes for adults and children. The space can also be used for smaller exhibitions or events.

The jewel in the crown is the gallery which has been created in the Engine Room. The metal roller screens have been replaced by glazed panelled doors, massive moveable walls have been built to display art works. The ambition is to host around eight exhibitions a year, of mixed genre, aiming to inspire the viewers and offer them a creative experience that is currently unavailable in Dunfermline. The inaugural exhibition is by Gordon Picken has been described as one of the best painters working in Scotland today. Work by local artists will be exhibited in the café area.

There's a small shop offering works by local artists and designers from cards and prints to artworks and jewellery.

And finally the café has been set up with the ambition of celebrating the art of food. Coffees, cakes, lunches and events will be catered from here with specials, supper clubs and tasting menus at various opportunities. The café opens onto a large yard with outdoor seating and evening sun.

Here's hoping for an inspiring summer!

The renovations and conversion of the building would not have been possible without the support and sponsorship by seven key organisations; Fife Council, Creative Scotland, The Robertson Trust, Fife Environment Trust, the Barcaple Foundation, Community Union and the Educational Institute of Scotland.

Cllr Helen Law, Chairperson for the City of Dunfermline Area Committee welcomed this new and innovative offering to the town centre. Cllr Law says "Fife Council is please that after a lot of work by Fire Station Creative working in partnership with Fife Council we are about to open the doors of what I hope and believe will be a very important addition to out town centre. The group are to be commended for their efforts in bringing this project to fruition and I'm sure that through time this facility will provide a much needed shot in the arm for our town centre"

David Taylor, Head of Strategic Projects, Creative Scotland, said "We are delighted to be able to support this project that will see Dunfermline's distinctive old Fire Station is being renovated to become a cultural hub. This will provide artists and creative practitioners access to the best possible facilities in Dunfermline. As well as creating a vibrant space for artists, it will increase access for the local community, and contribute to the on-going vibrancy of the town centre."
