Alma Turner, the Lady Captain at Crowborough Beacon Golf Club during 2019, nominated Crowborough Community First Responders as her charity.

The amount raised by the members during the year was over £17,000. This was split equally between the Crowborough Community First Responders, and Macmillan Cancer Support which was the nominated charity of the Men’s Captain.

Crowborough Community First Responders received a cheque for £8,528 which has been confirmed as the largest single one-off donation in the charity’s history.

The money was raised through a number of events held in the year.

Speaking on receipt of the cheque, Nicki Pointer (Team Leader – Crowborough CFR) said:

“We are thrilled to have received this amazing amount of money through donations at Crowborough Beacon Golf Club, after being the nominated chosen charity by Alma, the Lady Captain. This money will go towards placing more Public Access Defibrillators in our community, which potential will save more lives.”

Crowborough CFR Team Leader, Nicki Pointer alongside Leigh Westwood (SCFRTL) and Bloss Spink attended an event held at Bletchley Park, the ‘Home of the Codebreakers’ in Milton Keynes on 28 October 2019.

The event was arranged by Paul Devlin from NHS Improvement with NHS England, and the launch of International Community First Responders day was an opportunity to promote and recognise the lifesaving work of voluntary CFR schemes in valuing patient’s time.

Originally a day that was created by the Senate in the United States as part of their response to the events of 9/11, the 28 October is now a day for all Community First Responders around the world. For the event two special callsigns were granted by Ofcom, GB1NHS and GB1CFR, replacing the station’s usual GB3RS callsign.

The team were able to speak with contacts in the United States, Moldova and Israel as well as to a crew flying in a Boeing 737 in the skies whilst enroute to Albania.

Speaking afterwards, Nicki Pointer the Team Leader for Crowborough CFR said:“This was a fantastic opportunity to communicate with people around the world, promoting CFRs and recognising the value to patient’s time.”

Crowborough Community First Responders picked up a second national award this year at a prestigious award ceremony held in Manchester on 04 October 2019, hosted by television presenter Jenny Powell.

The awards are a celebration and recognition for outstanding individuals and organisations who have found the time, energy and resources to contribute to saving lives and creating heart safe environments for their workplaces and communities.

Hand on Heart, the charity behind the awards is a dedicated children’s charity committed to keeping children safe and prevent the deaths of 12 young people who die of sudden cardiac arrest each week in the UK. This year marked 8 years since the awards were introduced.

Nicki Pointer (Team Leader – Crowborough CFRs) and Leigh Westwood (Senior CFR Team Leader – Paddock Wood Operating Unit) attended the awards, where the team had been shortlisted in the Community Responder Group category. Up against many other very deserving individuals and organisations, Crowborough Community First Responders was announced as the winner, by category sponsor Project Heartbeat.

This is the second major national award that the team has picked up in 2019, and this event took place the evening before the team’s own Annual Black Tie Event, allowing the team to celebrate the success back in Crowborough. The award was on display alongside the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service that was awarded earlier in the year.

Megan Manktelow, the owner of The Boars Head Inn undertook a Sky Dive in aid of local charity Crowborough Community First Responders, on 02 October 2019.

The Sky Dive took place from Headcorn Aerodrome (nr Maidstone). The dive was completed as a tandem dive with Instructor Simon. After a morning of instruction, they boarded the parachute club’s aircraft G-GOHI and climbed up to around 12,000ft.

A fantastic total of £1,633.18 was raised thanks to the generosity of the pub’s customers, which means that the team are able to deploy another Public Access Defibrillator in the area, a vital lifesaving piece of equipment, that can increase the chance of survival from the ultimate medical emergency, a cardiac arrest.

There are around 30,000 out of hospital cardiac arrests in the UK every year, and without the presence of a defibrillator, the chance of a patient surviving is around 2%.

Speaking about the fundraising, Nicki Pointer (Team Leader – Crowborough CFR) said:“On behalf of the team, I wish to thank Megan for having the courage to skydive and raise money for our charity. The money that Megan has raised will be going into our Public Access Defibrillator project. The project is aiming to ensure that as well as adequate units around the town, the schools are prioritised and all local schools have this potentially lifesaving piece of equipment on site."

Megan is now planning to wing walk for the team in the summer of 2020.

From the Friends of Crowborough Community First Responders, Reg & Dee Hook along with around 10 other regulars from the pub went along to support.

The Alderbrook Community Association, Crowborough have worked with Wealden District Council Housing and Property Services and Crowborough Community First Responders to provide an emergency defibrillator unit for the Alderbrook estate. The Association successfully applied to the WDC Housing and Property Services Community & Environmental Budget for funding, with the Crowborough First Responders giving expert advice on the location, installation and specification of the unit. The nearest alternative defibrillator is located too far from the estate to have been used in a medical emergency. Thanks to everyone involved in this project for their work and time in providing this potentially lifesaving equipment for the local community.

The defibrillator unit is secured with an alarm and keypad lock to ensure that no-one can gain access without good need. If someone is calling 999 for any relevant incident, this will trigger the dispatch system to look for public access defibrillators within a defined area. The South East Coast Ambulance Emergency Operations Centre will then release the code to access the unit. If someone is stood next to the cabinet and calls, then the same applies and the code will be released.

Crowborough Community First Responders, a group of volunteers based in Crowborough in East Sussex, have been honoured with the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the highest award a voluntary group can receive in the UK.

The team’s volunteers are specially trained to respond to emergency as 999 calls as directed by South East Coast Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust. They also run the charity behind the scheme, fundraise for public access defibrillators and run free sessions that members of the public can attend to learn some basic lifesaving skills.

Representatives from the team attended Buckingham Palace in May, along with other recipients of this year’s Award.

Crowborough Community First Responders is one of 281 charities, social enterprises and voluntary groups to receive the prestigious award this year. The number of nominations and awards has increased year on year since the awards were introduced in 2002, showing that the voluntary sector is thriving and full of innovative ideas to make life better for those around them.

The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service aims to recognise outstanding work by volunteer groups to benefit their local communities. It was created in 2002 to celebrate the Queen’s Golden Jubilee. Winners are announced each year on 2 June – the anniversary of the Queen’s Coronation. Award winners this year are wonderfully diverse. They include volunteers helping people overcome mental health problems through sport, volunteers using caravans as mobile cafe/information centres in geographically remote locations and another group mentoring children who have a parent in prison.

Representatives of Crowborough Community First Responders attended a garden party at Buckingham Palace last month, and the group will receive the award from Peter Field, Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex later this summer.

Senior CFR Team Leader (South East Coast Ambulance Service – Paddock Wood OU) and Crowborough Community First Responder’s Team Leader, Leigh Westwood says:

We are incredibly honoured to have received this Award. I am very proud of the team who work tirelessly in our local communities, entirely on a voluntary basis. It is tremendous recognition of all the hard work and contribution that the team make to the success of our charity.

Crowborough Community First Responder’s Deputy Team Leader and South East Coast Ambulance Service Public Governor (East Sussex), Nicki Pointer says:

I am full of pride that the team has received this award. I would like to thank our frontline Community First Responders and Fundraising team for all their dedication to the community. Thank you also to the community we serve as volunteers, for all their support since our group was formed.

Community spirit and wellbeing should be at the forefront of all Crowborough residents’ minds. Our town is growing, local businesses expanding and new shops opening, it’s an exciting time. It was a shame that this was mildly tainted when one of the Public Access Defibrillators was vandalised recently, taking it out of service.

Robin Dowling, Crowborough resident and owner of The Health Insurance Specialists (THIS), a private health insurance brokerage recognises the importance of AED units and paid for an immediate replacement to be fitted by the town hall.

There are over 30,000 out of hospital cardiac arrests in the UK each year. Chances of survival are very small but without treatment a cardiac arrest victims’ chance of survival decreases significantly more by 10% per minute – a scary statistic but one that can be combated by having units like these fitted throughout town centres. Use of a defibrillator can aid chances of survival.

As a community we must take pride and control in town safety, whilst we can’t prevent thefts or vandalism like this it’s vital we raise awareness of the lifesaving work they are able to do. Thank you to Robin for helping to make a positive change to our community.

Funds that were raised through other local sources in response to the incident have been ringfenced for future Public Access Defibrillator deployments.

<![CDATA[ Crowborough Community First Responders call out for votes to bag a share of bag fund ]]> https://pressat.co.uk/releases/crowborough-community-first-responders-call-out-for-votes-to-bag-a-share-of-bag-fund-12acbb0321930ec54e88a12ede6335a6/ https://pressat.co.uk/releases/crowborough-community-first-responders-call-out-for-votes-to-bag-a-share-of-bag-fund-12acbb0321930ec54e88a12ede6335a6/ Wednesday 30 August, 2017

CROWBOROUGH COMMUNITY FIRST RESPONDERS are bidding to bag a massive cash boost from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative.

Tesco teamed up with Groundwork to launch its community funding scheme, which sees grants of £4,000, £2,000 and £1,000 – raised from carrier bag sales in Tesco stores - being awarded to local community projects.

Three groups in every Tesco region have been shortlisted to receive the cash award and shoppers are being invited to head along to Tesco stores to vote for who they think should take away the top grant.

CROWBOROUGH COMMUNITY FIRST RESPONDERS are one of the groups on the shortlist.

As specially trained volunteers responding to 999 calls with South East Coast Ambulance, we rely on funds for the purchase of the lifesaving equipment carried by our team, and the ongoing training and development of the team.

Team Leader, Leigh Westwood, said:

“This is a fantastic opportunity for the role of Community First Responders to be highlighted. Some people will never have heard about us or what we do, or be surprised to learn that there are teams across the country volunteering their support to their local ambulance service. Personally, I also act as Area Co-Ordinator for 10 teams in West Kent alone, and raising the profile of one team I am confident will undoubtedly have a knock on effect to others.”

Deputy Team Leader, Nicki Pointer, said:

“We are very pleased that the application to be a part of this initiative has been successful and thank you to Tesco for all their support. The money will potentially provide funds for 3 new Community First Responders. Our role can and does help save lives, alongside the CPR training sessions we hold for members of the public and school children. We also actively work to place Public Access Defibrillators into the local community.”

Voting is open in all Tesco stores throughout September and October. Customers will cast their vote using a token given to them at the check-out in store each time they shop.

Tesco’s Bags of Help project has already delivered over £33 million to more than 6,400 projects up and down the UK. Tesco customers get the chance to vote for three different groups every time they shop. Every other month, when votes are collected, three groups in each of Tesco’s regions will be awarded funding.

Alec Brown, Head of Community at Tesco, said:

“We are absolutely delighted to open the voting for September and October. There are some fantastic projects on the shortlists and we can’t wait to see these come to life in hundreds of communities.”

Groundwork’s National Chief Executive, Graham Duxbury, said:

“We’ve been thrilled to see the diversity of projects that have applied for funding, ranging from outdoor classrooms, sports facilities, community gardens, play areas and everything in between.

“We’re looking forward to learning the results of the customer vote and then supporting each group to bring their project to life.”

Funding is available to community groups and charities looking to fund local projects that bring benefits to communities. Anyone can nominate a project and organisations can apply online. To find out more visit www.tesco.com/bagsofhelp
