A £35,000 grant has been awarded to Eckersley House, a free ‘Home from Home’ which provides emotional and practical support for families with sick children being treated in hospital in Leeds. The grant, which has been awarded by Children’s Heart Surgery Fund (CHSF), will contribute to the running costs enabling families to stay free of charge.

Eckersley House, which is provided by The Sick Children’s Trust, helps approximately 530 families each year, 100 of which are children who undergo open heart surgery.

Sharon Coyle CEO of CHSF said: “We're thrilled to be able to provide funds to Eckersley House for another year. The accommodation they provide is second to none, and our heart families continue to receive such wonderful support from this local haven in their times of need." CHSF, who support the Leeds Congenital Heart Unit, initially helped with cost the build, and have contributed £445,000 to Eckersley House over the past 6 years.

<![CDATA[ Superhero Walk for Children’s Heart Surgery Fund ]]> https://pressat.co.uk/releases/superhero-walk-for-childrens-heart-surgery-fund-611a7602f6a137a6df41544158e8fc7a/ https://pressat.co.uk/releases/superhero-walk-for-childrens-heart-surgery-fund-611a7602f6a137a6df41544158e8fc7a/ Monday 1 August, 2016

Real superheroes live in the hearts of small children fighting big battles.

In their name, we’d like local supporters to join the Children’s Heart Surgery Fund for our Superhero Walk at Temple Newsam Park, Leeds on September 4th.

Our 1-mile sponsored walk will include heroes from the general public, families and friends of congenital heart patients, plus the patients themselves, all coming together to raise vital funds for the congenital heart unit at the LGI.

If it’s anything like last year, you’ll join forces with Batman, Spiderman, Minions, Superman, Iron Man, Peppa Pig, Catwoman, Wolverine, Captain America, Hulk, Flash, Thor, Wonder Woman, and of course, our own Katie Bear.

You just never know who might turn up!

However, real superheroes are disguised as ordinary people with extraordinary hearts - and costumes are not mandatory.

Whether it’s your favourite character, one you created or you’re appearing in your normal gear, heroes of all ages, ability and creativity are welcome.

Here’s your itinerary for the event on September 4th:

11:00am: Superhero registration (even heroes have to sign in)

12 noon: Walk starts (flying is optional)

Family activities until 3pm!

(Times to be confirmed)

Family tickets are £10, and can include two adults and up to three children.

We also ask families to raise a minimum of £50 for CHSF.

Bring along a picnic, or use the local food facilities to keep your superhero powers at full strength.

We will also have face painters, balloon modellers, a bouncy castle and an ice cream van!

The event this year has been very kindly funded by Simplyhealth.

Sarah Ford, spokesperson for Simplyhealth, commented: “We’re delighted to sponsor The Superhero Walk. It’s events like these which enables the Children’s Heart Surgery Fund to continue with the fantastic work they do.”

To buy tickets, call 0113 392 3987 or email Ben at events@chsf.org.uk.

<![CDATA[ Spend a penny, gain a pound for CHSF ]]> https://pressat.co.uk/releases/spend-a-penny-gain-a-pound-for-chsf-5bec84d91a5ad589eed0ac4739082b07/ https://pressat.co.uk/releases/spend-a-penny-gain-a-pound-for-chsf-5bec84d91a5ad589eed0ac4739082b07/ Tuesday 19 July, 2016

We’ve seen some madcap fundraising ideas over the years . . . taking a bath in baked beans… marathon running in suits of armour… climbing the Three Peaks by moonlight. But how can a trip to the toilet raise money for our charitable cause?

The thing is, we’re not talking a bog-standard toilet (pardon the pun) or just any old charity. The people of Leeds will be giving new meaning to the term spend a penny when the Geberit AquaClean Tour rolls into town to help raise vital funds for the Children’s Heart Surgery Fund over the weekend of July 30-31.

Everyone who comes aboard the Geberit AquaClean tour is invited to spend a penny in the literal sense, all in aid of Keeping The Beat - a campaign by Children’s Heart Surgery Fund to raise £500,000 for a revolutionary children’s heart theatre at the LGI. By trying the Geberit AquaClean shower toilet out for size, you’ll be doing your charitable bit too, as each penny received will be converted into a pound donation for Keeping The Beat.

Visitors will be encouraged to share their “first time face” on social media - they can have their photo taken to capture the moment they first experience this new toilet technology, with each share raising awareness of our cause.

To quote Geberit themselves: “Bringing high-tech wellness to the bathroom while being simple to operate by all the family, the Geberit AquaClean range of shower toilets clean with a gentle, airy water spray at body temperature, with an adjustable intensity to maximise on comfort.”

So innovative is the shower toilet experience that representatives of Children’s Heart Surgery Fund will be popping along to spend a penny too!

Children’s Heart Surgery Fund’s Corporate Fundraiser Ellie Brown said: “It sounded like a mad idea to begin with, but we think it's a great way to raise funds for our worthy cause and of course get people to see and try out a new technology. We want as many people as possible to come along and spend a penny during the tour and share their first time face. The more people that take part the more we can help our Keeping The Beat campaign. Each penny turns into a pound and a pound can do a lot of good.”

Sara Johnston, Geberit Consumer Marketing Manager adds: “We’re delighted to be partnering with Children’s Heart Surgery Fund and hope that we can change lots of pennies into pounds for them this weekend. It’s a great way of raising awareness and raising money while having a bit of fun. And of course visitors to the Geberit AquaClean Tour can also try out the very latest shower toilet technology, we want people to find out for themselves the benefits of cleaning with water. It is so good for health and well-being that we are certain that once tried you’ll want one in your bathroom!”

The Geberit AquaClean Tour will be at Briggate, Leeds converting pennies into pounds for Children’s Heart Surgery Fund and spreading the feel-good factor along the way. Find out more at www.geberit-aquaclean.co.uk/myfirsttime

Jane McHale, Eckersley House Manager, says: “When a family receives the devastating news their child requires lifesaving treatment at a specialist hospital, where they'll stay is the last thing on their mind. Eckersley House provides that much-needed peace of mind – the house keeps the whole family together and enables them to stay just minutes away from their sick child's bedside. We rely entirely on voluntary donations to, so The Children's Heart Surgery Fund grant will go directly towards supporting families at the most difficult of times imaginable.” The Children's Heart Surgery Fund, who support the Leeds Congenital Heart Unit, initially helped with cost the build, and have contributed £330,000 to Eckersley House over the past 5 years.

April Spink, a parent, says “We stayed in Eckersley House while our daughter Olivia had her third open heart surgery. We were so grateful to be staying there as it made life a little bit easier to know we were close to our daughter at such a worrying and stressful time.”
