As the festive season approaches, Age UK Lambeth is pleased to announce the launch of its Christmas fundraising campaign ‘Say No to Socks, Get a Gift You'll Remember’.

Are you tired of receiving unwanted, dust-collecting presents year after year? This festive season, why not make a meaningful change by receiving gifts that truly make a difference? Ask family and friends for donations instead of naff gifts and make it a year to remember!

‘24% of older Londoners (over the age of 50) live in poverty’ (Age UK London - Poverty amongst older Londoners October 2023)

The cost of living crisis has hit our older population particularly hard. Rising energy bills and soaring food prices have placed a heavy burden on older individuals, many of whom live on fixed incomes. Age UK Lambeth is committed to ensuring that no older person in our community is left behind during the holiday season.

‘Older Londoners are 50% more likely to experience food insecurity than the rest of England. Additionally, 58% of people in fuel poverty in London are over 60 (Age UK London, 2022).

This year's campaign is dedicated to addressing the profound challenges faced by older adults in our community due to the ever-increasing cost of living by asking people to replace those unwanted and forgettable presents with something that matters most: support for older adults in our community who need it. The funds collected will go towards essential services, including:

Winter Warm Hubs: With winter approaching, many older people will struggle to stay warm in their homes. Age UK Lambeth will provide a winter warm hub where they can come and stay warm, get a meal, and make friendsEnergy & Money Support: Age UK Lambeth will offer advice and support to help people with their energy bills, benefits, and other essential issues that older people often face during the winter months.Friendship Services: Loneliness and isolation are significant issues for older individuals, especially during the holidays. The campaign will fund our MYneighbour and MYsocial services to ensure the most isolated older people have someone to talk to and share the joy of the season with.
"Christmas is a time for joy and togetherness, but for many older adults in Lambeth, it can be a time of great hardship. The cost of living crisis has left them struggling to make ends meet, and we believe that no one should have to face these challenges alone," said Paul Coles, CEO of Age UK Lambeth

How it works:

Set up your Just Giving page which will connect directly to our Christmas campaignShare the link with family and friends and ask that they donate there instead of buying you a Christmas present this yearWatch as you raise life-changing money for older people in Lambeth

Direct donations can also be made to our Christmas campaign through our website www.justgiving.com/campaign/auklchristmas2023, by calling 07749 850058 or by emailing fundraising@ageuklambeth.org.

This March Age UK Lambeth are celebrating 20 years of their HandyFix service.

Over the years, our handypersons team have helped hundreds of thousands of people in Lambeth. We decided to take a look back at our time in Lambeth and talk to one of the original team members. Alan Smith joined Age UK Lambeth in 1999 and worked for us for 15 years (our longest serving handyperson!). We got back in touch with Alan to find out more about his time with the HandyFix team, here’s what he had to say…

Q. What made you want to work for a charity?

A. I always had a well-paid job, with a good life and felt I needed to give something back to the community

Q. What was your favourite part of the job?

A. Interacting with older people and helping to make them safe in their own homes.

Q. Did you have a favourite customer?

A. There were a few people that were regular clients and I always enjoyed a cup of tea and a chat with them. It was one of the great rewards of the job, only when time permitted of course!

Q. Any great stories?

A. There are so many but there is one that I will never forget. I was sent to visit an 86 year old lady that was having problems bathing and wanted a handrail fitted in her bath. I asked her to show me how she gets in the bath, to determine where the rail should go, which she did without a problem. I noticed that she got in without any problem, however, she quickly pointed out that the problem wasn’t getting in the bath but getting out! So I apologised to her for asking her to get in there in the first place and helped her by lifting her out. Her reply to me was that no apology was needed as this was the first time she had been lifted up by a man in 30 years!

Q. What difference did the service make to the lives of your customers?

A. It gave back dignity to people that struggled to do the jobs that when they were younger they could do themselves.

Q. Is there anything you don’t miss?

A. I don't miss the traffic or the problems of parking! I suspect nothing has changed there.

Graham Gardiner, the CEO of Age UK Lambeth, said:

‘For 20 years our handypersons team has helped keep the older citizens of Lambeth safe and independent in their own homes. We are very proud of our team and the work they do and we look forward to doing the same for them and the wider public for the next 20 years.’

Have you got some jobs around the home that you just haven’t got time for? Then why not give us a call! Our service is available for everyone to use (not just older people) and is only £25.00 an hour. We will always stay for the full hour so we can do as many jobs as possible. Call, email or go online today.

With Christmas speeding towards us, Age UK Lambeth are launching their Christmas Campaign to provide 65 meals for older people who would otherwise be alone and are asking the local community to support them with donations.

On Christmas Day we open up the doors of Vida’s and provide 40 meals to our clients who would be on their own, we also deliver another 25 meals to those who prefer to stay at home. We know this makes a huge difference to older people and we are proud to say we support them on Christmas Day.

Graham Gardiner, Age UK Lambeth’s CEO, says "Christmas is a really difficult time for those who are alone. When you are lonely and isolated Christmas Day is just like every other day of the year, and we want to change that for as many people as we can. More than 56% of people aged over 65 live alone in Lambeth, your donations could help make a difference this year."

People can make donations by visiting https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/LambethChristmas or by texting AUKL25 £5 to 70070 to donate £5 via Justgiving by Vodafone.

We are aiming to raise £3,000 from the campaign and anything that we don’t need for Christmas Day will go towards our MYsocial service that helps reduces loneliness by encouraging people to discover friendships, connect with their community and do things that make them happy.

Age UK Lambeth is a local independent charity who have been supporting older people for over 70 years, we are affiliated with Age UK but raise all our own funds to pay for local services for older people in Lambeth.

You can make a donation online at https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/LambethChristmas or by phone by texting AUKL25 £5 to 70070 to donate £5 via Justgiving by Vodafone. Or by sending a cheque made payable to Age UK Lambeth to: Christmas Campaign, Age UK Lambeth, Third floor, 336 Brixton Road, London, SW9 7AA.

Stay Safe for Older People is a vital new initiative providing essential information to older people and those who care for them; helping them stay safe, healthy and avoid preventable accidents.

Saving the distress and often catastrophic implications of these accidents and reducing the impact to the NHS of these totally avoidable admissions.

Stay Safe for Older People – https://www.staysafe.support

The aim: to make it easier for older people, and those who care for them, to access vital information and advice that supports their health and wellbeing.

The service: www.staysafe.support is a free information and resource website signposting older people, their friends, family and carers to a wealth of expert services and support to help them stay safe, healthy and avoid preventable accidents.

The problem: the information for elderly people can be disparate and hard to track down.

The solution: Our umbrella site https://www.staysafe.support is clearly signposted, regularly updated, well organised and user friendly. It unites many organisations and support groups all aiming to help older people stay safe, remain healthy and independent and avoid hospital admissions arising from preventable accidents in the home environment.

www.staysafe.support: founded and funded by Emma Hammett RGN (First Aid for Life) and Carolyn Cripps OBE (Fit for Life).

Key partners: Age UK, RoSPA, Trading Standards Scams and Fraud Team.

Key players and influencers: Electrical Safety First, Gas Safe, HSE, Women’s Institute, E-Scams, National Fire Chiefs Council and many more.

The challenge: to reduce the pressure on the NHS. The blistering summer means the usual summer lull hasn’t happened. The overstretched NHS is instead braced for one of the most challenging winters in its 70-year-old history. One way of reducing the pressure on the NHS is to minimise the huge number of elderly needing emergency treatment as a result of totally preventable accidents in the home.

The figures: Figures from RoSPA show in 2016-2017 there were 316,669 hospital admissions in England of people 65 and over, due to falling. This is the equivalent of a staggering 867 each day.

Fatal figures: according to Age UK, falls are the biggest cause of hospital admissions for older people. Recent figures show 4,984 people age 65 and over died from falls, an average of 13 deaths per day.

The prediction: experts predict that within 2 years almost 1,000 elderly per day will be taken into hospital after suffering a fall.

The cost: falls can be catastrophic for the elderly, leaving them unable to walk, declining in health and dependent on others. This has associated health costs at home, or in hospital.

StaySafe.Support intends: to halt this trend by sourcing and supplying older people and their carers with vital information to prevent avoidable accidents and reduce the consequential impact on the NHS.

The outcome: healthier, happier older people who stay well and independent for longer. A significantly less-stretched and financially healthier NHS.

Stay Safe supporters: the Deputy Mayor of London for Social Integration, Matthew Ryder will be attending the launch of Stay Safe on behalf of the Mayor, Sadiq Khan. BBC Health Editor, Hugh Pym, is hoping to join us too.

Dame Esther Rantzen is extremely supportive of our initiative. We are discussing how we can work closer with her and Silver Line Helpline for Older People.

“Make Lambeth Age Friendly!”

Manifesto from Age UK Lambeth for the London Borough Council Elections

Against the background of a crisis in adult social care, Age UK Lambeth wants to make Lambeth Age Friendly, with a brand new manifesto for the upcoming London borough council elections on May 3rd. Diana Kahn, the Chair of Age UK Lambeth, says

“I call on all candidates in the Lambeth local elections in May 2018 to support this manifesto from Age UK's in London. Age UK's across London are committed to making sure that older people in London, regardless of faith, ethnicity, gender, sexuality or circumstance, are able to enjoy a fulfilling and valued life, and we hope that whatever your political party you will state your support for this aim and the recommendations in this manifesto.” The full manifesto can be downloaded from the Age UK London website: https://bit.ly/2Gecod1

Age UK Lambeth calls on candidates in the London borough council elections to commit to making changes in five key areas:

Quality, responsive local care services: We call on candidates to:Give top political priority to ensuring that older people with identified care needs are not left without support

2. Age Friendly Boroughs and Neighbourhoods: We call on candidates to:

Bring the borough into line with the World Health Organisation’s Age Friendly Cities approach and cooperate with other local authorities and the Mayor of London to develop this concept.Work to make the borough dementia friendly if this is not already in progress.

3. Better Communication with Older People: We call on candidates to:

Make information and advice accessible to all older Londoners, including disabled people with physical and sensory impairments and those who are not online

4. Make London’s Housing Age Friendly: We call on candidates to:

Ensure provision of more genuinely affordable, accessible housing to rent (long term) and buy for people of all ages; meet at least the London Plan targets for provision of good quality, affordable specialist housing for older people.

5. Accessible Transport for Older Londoners: We call on candidates to:

Ensure that the borough supports retention of the Freedom Pass and TfL 60+ Oyster Photocard and that they are not means tested.

As London grows, the number of older Londoners is increasing too. A socially and economically diverse group, older Londoners contribute massively to every borough of the capital, as workers, volunteers, carers, and much more besides. However, a large number of older Londoners are living below the poverty line and the pressure on local government finances has driven adult social care to breaking point. Action must be taken to ensure London can remain a great place to grow older.

No one should have no one on Christmas Day

Age UK Lambeth needs your support to provide a Christmas Dinner for the most isolated older people

On Christmas Day volunteers from Age UK Lambeth will be cooking up turkey and all the trimmings and providing dinner, gifts and entertainment for 40 of the most socially isolated older people across the borough of Lambeth at their community hub Vida’s. We will also be providing a further 20 meals for those who would prefer to be at home and we need your help to make it happen.

Could you make a donation to provide a Christmas Lunch for a lonely older person?

You can donate any amount online at https://www.justgiving.com/campaigns/charity/auklambeth/nooneshouldhavenoone2017

or

by texting AUKL17 £4 to 70070 to donate £4.

Winter and the festive season can be tough for older people, it gets dark early, the bad weather can make people worried to go out and as so much of the focus in the media is on family time, you can feel especially isolated if you don’t have any family nearby. In fact half a million older people across the UK will spend Christmas Day alone.

200,000 older people say they haven't had a conversation with friends or family for a month.3.9 million older people agree the television is their main form of company.Loneliness can be as harmful for our health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day.

This year we have the great pleasure to have British actress Miriam Margolyes OBE supporting our Christmas campaign to tackle loneliness for older people in Lambeth!

Age UK Lambeth is a local independent charity that supports older people across the entire borough with a range of services to help people stay as independent and active as possible. We want to ensure that the second half of their life is as enjoyable as the first, and we rely on the generosity of the local community and businesses in order to provide our services.

There are also opportunities for businesses and volunteers to get involved with our Christmas Day Dinner. If you are local business who would like to find out about sponsorship opportunities for our No one should have no one campaign then please email Claire.nethersole@ageuklambeth.org.uk If you would like to volunteer please email bev@ageuklambeth.org

The money raised from the campaign will be also used for a Christmas party for our clients and for MySocial. MySocial is our service providing a calendar of fun events all year round for older people to meet new friends, stay active and enjoy their lives.

Winter Warm and Well is a multi channel campaign from Age UK Lambeth, supported by Lambeth CCG, which is aimed to ease seasonal pressure on NHS primary, urgent care and emergency services.

The winter months can be challenging for the NHS, especially for urgent care services. The seasonal increase in hospital admissions can lead to hospital congestive failure (where resources are diverted from elsewhere in the hospital to cope with the influx from A&E). The holiday period from 24 December to 2 January is particularly challenging as many GP practices and pharmacies close for all or part of this period.

The Age UK Lambeth Winter Warm and Well campaign is designed to reduce the number of older and vulnerable people, who become so ill that they require admission to hospital.

Our goal is to ensure that older people who are most at-risk of preventable emergency admission to hospital are aware of and, wherever possible, are motivated to take, those actions that may avoid admission this winter.

Our campaign is focused on reaching older people (and other vulnerable groups) across Lambeth, supporting the key messages of the PHE Stay Well this Winter campaign.

We are happy to announce that we are now taking applications for grants for the 2017/18 Warm & Well in Winter campaign. The grants are for community groups and organisations working with older people to put on social events for their members as part of the campaign to raise awareness of the importance of staying warm during the colder months.

<![CDATA[ "Age does not define us" - Age UK Lambeth Annual Public Meeting ]]> https://pressat.co.uk/releases/age-does-not-define-us-age-uk-lambeth-annual-public-meeting-c9c7cbd8ad396004f8276b6d08373fcf/ https://pressat.co.uk/releases/age-does-not-define-us-age-uk-lambeth-annual-public-meeting-c9c7cbd8ad396004f8276b6d08373fcf/ Tuesday 10 October, 2017

Age Does Not Define Us

That's the title of the talk being given by this year's Guest Speaker, Dr Jonathan Collie, co-founder of The Age of No Retirement.

In today’s world, the labels of ‘age’ and ‘generations’ that have for many years been used to understand who we are as people, have become increasingly irrelevant. In fact, they have become downright dangerous. They undermine our sense of self-worth, cause division in our society and they hold us back.

The Age of No Retirement is a movement for social change, and a great deal more. We are part design lab, part research unit, part network and part storyteller. We are also full-time collaborators, and 100% committed to creating a world where our age, and how many birthdays we have, no longer matters.

We work with corporations, small businesses, the media, government, third sector organisations and people of all ages and backgrounds to create products, services and environments that challenge the boundaries of age and that work for all of us — however young or old we are.

We facilitate debate and discussion around the value that an intergenerational society brings to us — as citizens, as consumers, as workers — and the positive impact this has on the products and services we interact with every single day.

Jonathan is a passionate social entrepreneur. The greater the challenge, the greater the opportunity. Jonathan began his career as a doctor in the NHS before moving into health IT via an MBA at the University of Edinburgh.

In 2011, Jonathan entered and won a national challenge, run by the Design Council and funded by the Department of Health. It was here that he was first introduced to design-led thinking and came to appreciate that every problem, no matter how large or complex, could be solved by design and innovation.

In 2014, Jonathan launched Trading Times – the online service that connects people over 50 with local employers for flexible, paid work. As a direct result of insights gained through the prototyping, piloting, developing and launching of Trading Times, Jonathan became committed to changing the narrative of Age, from one of dependence and decline to one of exploration and optimism.

Jonathan was born in London and grew up in South Africa. He lives in London with his wife Robinne, daughter Ruby, and son Tyler.

And following Jonathan, we invite you to join us for lunch!

45+ events for Lambeth residents aged over 55!

Age UK Lambeth’s 19th annual Celebrating Age Festival begins on the United Nations International Day of Older Persons on 1st October 2017.

Just like every year, the festival promotes the richness and diversity of Lambeth communities and our events will be attractive to people of different interests, whether you are looking to indulge in familiar activities or discover something entirely new. The programme includes film screenings, concerts, dances, trips and exhibitions, so there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Age UK Lambeth is delighted to support the festival again this year and we continue to welcome organisations to sponsor us in different ways. You can donate to support our services by using the donation boxes at Celebrating Age events, visiting our website (http://www.ageuk.org.uk/lambeth/) by clicking on the Donate button or by writing us a cheque payable to Age UK Lambeth and pop it along to us at our offices at 336 Brixton Road.

The Celebrating Age Festival calendar of events is available from community venues including libraries and all the events throughout October can be found online on http://www.mysocial.london or by ringing 020 7346 6800 for further information.

Happy Carers Week

Did you know this week is Carers Week? Carers Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK. Did you know that the unpaid care provided by the UK's carers has been estimated to be worth £132 billion a year. And that, more than 7 in 10 (74%) of the UK public feel carers are not sufficiently valued by society for the support they provide and this figure rises to just over eight in ten (83%) of those who have previous experience of caring themselves. These stats come from a new report published today for carers week. You can find out more about it here. You can also get more ideas about getting involved. The Carers Hub is part of a consortium that Age UK Lambeth leads, and is the work of Help for Carers and Lambeth Mencap. We know that being a carer can be enormously satisfying. But it can also be hard work. It can overwhelm our lives: so much so that it can be difficult to find time for yourself. Or to get the support you need. If you need support, want to join a social group or just want some good information and advice, why not give the hotline a call on 0207 095 5720 during office hours? Our Advisors can tell you what support is on offer for Carers. If you are looking for things to do and new people to meet then why not think about joining our new service, MYsocial. We have a great (and getting bigger all the time) calendar of events that might appeal to you. And, coming soon, we will have a range of deals from businesses around the borough so you can save money too! And as a special thank you, we are offering you FREE one-year membership of MYsocial. All you have to do to register is click here! Whatever you do, if you are a carer, make sure you get the help and support that is there for you. And take advantage of opportunities to meet others too! With all best wishes this Carers Week

Graham Gardiner

For immediate release

New service from Age UK Lambeth, MYsocial, launches on June 3rd with a Reggae & Soul afternoon

There has been a lot of research to show that loneliness and social isolation are harmful to our health: demonstrating, amongst other things, that lacking social connections is as damaging to our health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day, that being lonely makes you more prone to depression, and that two fifths of all older people say the television is their main company. With that in mind, Age UK Lambeth is launching a new social membership service called MYsocial on Saturday June 3rd with a Reggae and Soul afternoon. MYsocial members will have access to a full social calendar, the chance to meet new people, and do things that make them happy. Membership, usually £4.95 a month, is open to all ages and will be free for anyone coming to the launch event to be held at The Hideaway, Streatham between 1pm and 4pm. Tickets are free but need to be booked by visiting www.mysocial.london or calling Age UK Lambeth on 0207 346 6800.

Age UK Lambeth Chief Executive, Graham Gardiner, says, “Lambeth is a great borough, with lots of things to do and see. But it is also a borough with a great number of people, of all ages and from all walks of life, who feel lonely some of the time. MYsocial is a great chance to find people to do new things with. We look forward to meeting new friends on Saturday 3rd June, the first of what will be many exciting events for MYsocial members ”

With a third of events free and a third under a tenner, MYsocial is affordable for most people. Members will save money by getting free tea and coffee at the Member's Lounge, Vida Walsh Centre, Saltoun Road, as well as saving money on events and eventually with a range of local businesses.
