Today (29th November 2016) Reading based AfriCat UK launches a £50,000 appeal to build a permanent brick built school in Namibia to ensure that 150 children from pre-school to grade 3 can be educated in safe conditions. The launch coincides with this year's #GivingTuesday - world giving day for Christmas 2016.

“The brick building will replace two temporary army tents that currently houses the Onguta School, in the Ehirovipuka Conservancy of Northern Namibia. The building will be made from local brick produced by the villagers where the School is situated.

"The people of this Conservancy are highly committed to the conservation of carnivores and this work illustrates the value of wildlife conservation agencies working with local communities to ensure the preservation of cats in the wild" said Tammy Hoth-Hanssen Director of the AfriCat Foundation. The Conservancy made the request for AfriCat assistance when the marquee structure blew down in high winds and the Army provided two makeshift tents to house the School. Now the life of the tents are coming to an end and the Conservancy desperately needs the School to be housed in a permanent structure. The Conservancy has allocated and cleared an area for the School to be sited, local people working with Nam Water have provided a water supply close to the School and the community will make the bricks from local clay to make the bricks. An architect has drawn up plans for building "All that now is needed are the resources to allow the School to be built". said Mrs Hoth-Hanssen.

In this new venture for AfriCat people can purcahse as many bricks as they wish that will go towards constructing the school. Donors will be remembered for their support on commemorative plaques that will be placed on one of the building walls. An enduring way to thank the people who supported the project. Further details about the appeal and details of the launch at:http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/fund/africatadoptabrick #GivingTuesday (29th November 2016) is a global day of giving. After the sales of Black Friday and the online shopping boom on Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday is an opportunity to come together to show the world why it’s good to give as #GivingTuesday is a call to action for everyone who wants to give something back.

GB Rowing Olympians and Para-Olympians achievements acknowledged at Charity fundraiser in Reading

GB’s Olympic Champions in the Men’s and Women’s rowing eight’s and Tom Aggar the four-times World Champion and the longest-serving member of the GB Para-Rowing Team, achievements will be celebrated at a charity dinner to be held on Friday evening 21st October at Queen Anne’s School, Caversham.

The rowers, to include triple Olympic Champion Andrew Triggs-Hodge, will tell their behind scenes stories of what it is takes to become an Olympic champion. There will be a dinner and the evening will finish with an auction in aid of the two charities organising the event.

The charities, both based in Berkshire, are: The Bruce Trust and AfriCat UK.

For the GB Rowers Andrew Triggs-Hodge said: “It is a great honour to represent and fundraise for both of these charities. They do great work in two hugely important areas. Raising money for the conservation of Africa’s wildlife, with education across the community will play a major role in making sure future generations witness the beauty of African wildlife. And the work the Bruce Trust do for the disabled is hugely inspiring, and life changing. Having witnessed the joy these opportunities bring, I am honoured to be able to bring my medals and experiences to raise as much money as we can”.

David Bruce of The Bruce Trust said: "This is a wonderful opportunity for my local Trust to team up with an international charity to raise not only much-needed funds but also our respective public profiles.

It is a great honour that so many Olympic Rowing Champions are supporting this event and they are an absolute inspiration to us all".

David Farquharson, Chairman of AfriCat UK, said “We are tremendously looking forward to jointly hosting this wonderful event with the Bruce Trust. A full house is expected and it’s a great opportunity for us to be able to highlight all of the good work that AfriCat does in the areas of conservation, education and community enhancement. Our thanks must particularly go to Andrew Triggs-Hodge and the other GB rowers for giving their time so willingly – their insights into what it takes to win Olympic Gold will be fascinating”.

AfriCat's Adopt-A-Spot to be part of #Giving Tuesday 2015's global day of giving

AfriCat, an interntional charity based in Reading, has joined more than 1,000 UK charities and businesses as an official partner of #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving at the start of the festive season.

The day, led in the UK by the Charities Aid Foundation, takes place on December 1 and follows Black Friday and Cyber Monday - two of the UK's biggest shopping days. It is an opportunity for charities, families, businesses, community centres and students to come together to do something good for a cause they care about.

AfriCat is planning on to organise an Adopt-A-Spot campaign:

Adopt-A-Spot will be an enjoyable and fun way of helping AfriCat help Namibia's spotted cats. It's an easy and affordable opportunity to contribute to the conservation of large carnivores in Namibia.

At our new Carnivore Care and Information Centre at the AfriCat Headquarters in Namibia we have 2 huge cats painted on our wall. One is a CHEETAH and the other a LEOPARD. Their spots and rosettes are not coloured in yet – but as soon as someone adopts a spot, the cheetah and leopard will slowly get their spots back. For a donation that can be made on line at: the donor be sent an email with a photograph of the spot being painted and they will have their name and where they are from added to each spot painted.

In addition AfriCat will send a thank you card with a Chris Packham photo of either a leopard or a cheetah – depending on which animal is adopted.

From the Reading Office of AfriCat Carey Widdows said: "The #GivingTuesday movement gives us a chance to connect donors directly to our work to conserve wildlife through education that our staff and volunteers do and get a memento at the same time. The painting of the spot, name and address of people will make a different Christmas present for 2015.

"Being part of such a fast growing movement is really an exciting development".

Kim Roberts, CAF's #GivingTuesday campaign manager said:

“We are astounded at the response to #GivingTuesday this year and delighted that we have hit 1,000 partners already.

“After two of the most frenetic shopping days of the year, #GivingTuesday is a day when charity can really kick off Christmas.

“People now have an extra reason to be charitable and shout about it. It is a chance for charities to celebrate the great work they do and for people to give back to the causes they care about."

#GivingTuesday came to the UK for the first time last year, having originated in the USA in 2012. It now takes place in 12 countries across the world. This time last year just 285 organisations were on board for the UK campaign.

Last year charity donations online rose sharply on #GivingTuesday.

Just Giving saw a 46% increase in donations compared to the previous year and Visa found that an average of £2500 was donated every minute on #GivingTuesday by UK Visa cardholders – this was a 10% higher than figures for the same day in 2013.

Last year the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition and a number of celebrities including Helen Mirren, David Tennant, Tom Daley and Rita Ora all publicly supported the campaign.

Sucessful wildlife conservation story to be in London event to be hosted by Lorraine Kelly

The story of a successful wildlife conservation project is to be told in London on the 8th October at Framestore, 19-23 Wells Street, London. W1T 3PQ AfriCat - a conservation and education charity based in Namibia - is running the event to be hosted by Lorraine Kelly -

"As someone who has visited Okonjima, the home of the AfriCat Foundation in Namibia - Lorraine is great ambassador for the charity" said David Farquharson Chair of AfriCat UK

"After the shooting of Cecil the lion near a National Park in Zimbabwe there is great interest in knowing what can be done to ensure that conflict between animals and humans can be managed and especially to ensure that the large carnivores (such as lions, leopards, cheetah, hyena and the endangered Cape Hunting Dogs) can be allowed to roam free and not be killed. This is the work that AfriCat undertakes".

The evening will consist of stories about the challenges that AfriCat has faced trying to keep carnivores free, personal accounts from Lorraine Kelly about her visits to the AfriCat Foundation headquarters at Okonjima in Namibia, short films by Chris Packham, another AfriCat patron and frequent visitor to Namibia.

AfriCat was founded in 1991 on Okonjima Farm in central Namibia whose mission was to contribute to the long term conservation of Namibia's large carnivores.

AfriCat was created as a result of information gained on Okonjima when it was still a cattle farm, losing calves to leopards and the desire and urgent need of sharing this information with fellow ...farmers.

The consequent contact with numerous farmers and AfriCat's exposure led to the rescue of many trapped large carnivores. Since 1993 over 1080 of these predators were rescued by AfriCat and 85% of them were released back into the wild. At the AfriCat Story on the 8th October people will find out how AfriCat has been transformed into a leading environmental education, carnivore research and human/wildlife conflict mitigation agency and what their plans are for the future.

AfriCat an international conservation and education charity, that has its UK base in the South East, is celebrating its 21st birthday by working with two schools in Buckinghamshire.

Set up in 1993, with its African base in Namibia, AfriCat is dedicated to conserving the large carnivores in the wild by working with local communities to manage the conflicts that occur between humans and wildlife.

As part of the celebrations, the AfriCat Foundation's founding Director, Tammy Hoth-Hanssen is coming to the UK from the 10th until the 19th October and will be visiting schools, education and conservation projects throughout the country.

Tammy from AfriCat will visit a school in the Buckinghamshire area :

On Monday 13 October, Dr Challoner's Grammar School, Chesham Rd, Amersham Buckinghamshire, HP6 5HA

On Tuesday 14 October, Wycombe Abbey, High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, HP11 1PE

Mrs Hoth-Hanssen will talk about her work to keep large carnivores in the African wild and finding careers in conservation. She said:

"AfriCat offers practical solutions to people who have to live with lions, cheetahs and leopards. These animals are beautiful to see but they are dangerous and they are able to kill people and destroy livelihoods by taking livestock. As local farmers we know the problems but over the years we have developed ways for farmers to reduce their losses of their cattle and goats and shown how wild animals can regenerate local economies through tourism.

Tammy will also be talking at other schools, universities and businesses in other parts of the country.

The end of the week sees a major fund raising event with Chris Packham - conservationist, broadcaster, ecologist, presenter, wildlife photographer and AfriCat patron- presenting a talk on Big Cats: Keeping them Wild which is being held at the Royal Geographical Society, 1 Kensington Gore SW7 2AR www.africat.co.uk. October 17 from 7.30pm until 10pm Tickets £20.

Tammy Hoth-Hanssen, said

"AfriCat UK is making great strides in bringing public attention to the significant benefits that conservation and education can have in enhancing local communities in Namibia. We are delighted that Chris has been kind enough to offer his services to us and we encourage as many people as possible to come along for what promises to be a brilliant and fascinating evening".

Chris Packham brings his one-off show ‘Big Cats: Keeping them Wild’ to London Friday 17th October.

'Big cats are a group of animals which command tremendous attention through their unparalleled beauty and their long cultural associations with our cultures. In simple terms Tigers, Lions, Leopards and Cheetahs are some of natures greatest masterpieces. And yet for all our global awe they are in real trouble. As our population grows there is no longer the opportunity to wrap them up and isolate them. Future conservation means living with them - something we understandably struggle to do, but can learn to do. And that is one of AfriCat’s key objectives and successes - reducing human/wildlife conflict to achieve effective and sustainable conservation - something I am keen to champion'”. Said Chris

S

At this illustrated talk the conservationist, broadcaster, ecologist presenter, wildlife photographer will outline sometimes his controversial views on what he feels now needs to be done to conserve big cats in the wild. The talk will be accompanied by his own photographs and film clips. On the evening Chris will also share some of his tips and ideas about taking great wildlife photos.

David Farquharson, trustee of Africat UK, added

We are delighted that Chris has been kind enough to offer his services to us and we encourage as many people as possible to come along for what promises to be a brilliant and fascinating evening".

All proceeds for the evening will go to AfriCat – a Namibian based education and conservation charity dedicated to ensuring the future of big cats in the wild of their country.
