Two teachers have launched LifeGames, a free app designed to address increasing behavioural issues in UK and Irish schools. It comes after exclusive research revealed an urgent call by teachers for more development of social skills within the current education system.

The free app teaches key life and social skills such as empathy, respect, responsibility and effective communication through a collection of over 40 activities and games for three age groups (3-5, 6-9, 10-12). A further 250+ activities and games are also available in a variety of modestly-priced premium packs.

Frustrated by the increased focus on academic achievement at the expense of essential life skills, and driven by their experiences of teaching children with behavioural issues, teachers Lukarte Turner and Gabriela Andino developed the LifeGames activities to help reverse the trend of misbehaviour and social ineptitude, and give a helping hand to our already highly stressed teachers.

"LifeGames activities have been created thinking about children, of course," says Lukarte, "but also thinking about teachers, because they are the ones who told us how much stress they’re under and how difficult their job is. LifeGames has been designed with them in mind, to give them a vital classroom resource that helps students understand a better way of living, happier, healthier and more connected to each other. Students need to learn more about life and about themselves, and teachers, together with parents, can help them with that."

Initial research by LifeGames revealed that teachers claim empathy is the most lacking of social skills taught in the current education system, with other key words such as compassion, respect, resilience, cooperation and responsibility also mentioned. 87% of teachers surveyed said they were likely to use a product that helped develop these social skills and traits, with 90% saying they’d use it at least once per week.

LifeGames activities were successfully trialled in a pilot program involving 22 schools in the UK and Ireland in January 2019, receiving an overwhelmingly positive response from teachers who rated the activities according to their simplicity, popularity and effectiveness. With most activities scoring at least 4 out of 5, teachers reported that students were motivated and engaged by the activities, felt better able to express themselves, were more respectful of others, and had a greater sense of responsibility afterwards.

"One of the problems teachers were telling us was a lack of time," says Lukarte. "We created this app with that in mind. Our activities are very simple, short, easy to use and have proven highly effective."

Activities in the collection include role-playing games that tackle bullying, puzzles that incentivise cooperation, team challenges that promote leadership and responsibility, tasks that foster trust and good communication, group projects that inspire sharing and community thinking. Premium users also get access to a lesson planner to help fit activities around normal class scheduling.

LifeGames is available as a free app from Google Play and App Store, and also in a large format, illustrated teachers handbook entitled 'Introducing LifeGames - 101 Fun Life Learning Activities for Juniors, available from Amazon.co.uk.

In support of National Gas Safety Week by the Gas Safe Register (16-22 September 2019), local Gas Safe registered engineers from CP12 Energy in Newcastle, are creating daily informational articles, to inform landlords and the public of gas safety issues and to remind everyone of the importance of having an annual gas safety check by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

This Gas Safety Week we are informing the public of a wide range of gas safety matters throughout the week. This includes how to stay Gas Safe all year round, what landlords need to know about Gas Safety, and what renters should expect from their landlords when it comes to Gas Safety in their home.

Gas appliances that have not properly been maintained can cause gas leaks, fires, explosions and carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. Carbon monoxide is known as the ‘silent killer’ because you can’t see, smell or taste it. Therefore, it is highly important to have your gas appliances checked by an engineer who is on the Gas Safe Register.

British Online Safety Business Launches Green Web Filtering for UK Schools.

September 2019 – Horizon Technologies and the Satellite Applications Catapult have signed a memorandum of understanding with the National Maritime Information Centre (NMIC) to supply satellite data from their new IOD-3 AMBER satellite. This data will provide government end-users with crucial maritime information allowing law enforcement agencies to pinpoint and potentially intercept law breakers at sea.

Horizon Technologies already has a proven track record of working with national governments, international and regional organizations, and private industry. This partnership with NMIC will cement Horizon Technologies’ position as a leading supplier of maritime intelligence from satellites.

The satellite forms part of the Satellite Applications Catapult’s In-Orbit Demonstration programme (IOD), funded by Innovate UK, and combines three different types of data, including information from satellite phones, to help track marine vessels.

At present, all ships are fitted with Automatic Identification Signals (AIS), which can be detected by satellites, but AIS can be disabled to avoid detection when undertaking activities such as illegal fishing, piracy, smuggling, and transhipments. This new satellite will reduce the dependency on AIS by using other sources of data to provide location information.

The payload on board IOD-3 AMBER will be able to locate and track vessels worldwide by picking up their electronic emissions using an L-band Satphone detection sensor package derived from the existing FlyingFish™ system. This is combined with an AIS receiver and sensors to detect, geolocate, and classify X/S-band maritime radars, allowing correlation of these signals against the presence of AIS beacons.

September 2019, will be a day to remember for all of the amazing people who protect us and save lives every day. The mission of the day is to permanently cement respect and gratitude from the public in the form of continuous kind gestures to the Emergency Services; like buying someone a coffee, a donut, or some other way of saying thank you. The more sporadic and unexpected the gestures are, the more special they will feel.

The illegality of the Turkish invasion and the continuing occupation of the northern territory of the Republic of Cyprus allegedly in accordance with the Treaty of Guarantee of 1960, is self evident. This question has been discussed by scholars of great calibre who have confirmed such illegality. Neither the wording of the Treaty, nor international law and practice in general would justify such action on the part of Turkey.

The 1960 Treaty of Guarantee is an international treaty entered into according to the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties, between the newly established Republic of Cyprus, Greece, Turkey and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

In examining the legality of such guarantee mention is always made of the basic guidelines of Article 103 of the Charter, which provide that:

“In the event of a conflict between the obligations of the Members of the United Nations under the present Charter and their obligations under any other international agreement, their obligations under the present Charter shall prevail.”

In order to ascertain the degree of compliance of the Treaty of Guarantee with said guidelines one must look firstly at Article 2(1) of the Charter as well as Article 2(4) which expressly prohibit the use or threat of use of force to settle differences between sovereign states and is undoubtedly a jus cogens
provision; also, whether the exceptions provided for in Articles 51 and 53 of the Charter apply. If, according to appraisal by international authorities including international court judgments, the provisions of the above articles do not justify such military intervention, then any such action is manifestly illegal.

No doubt both Cyprus and the UK consider the Treaty as binding and as creating obligations under international law, which should be performed in good faith (Art. 26 of the VCLT – pacta sunt servanda).

It is also self-evident from the facts surrounding the 1974 invasion that the UK clearly failed to perform its obligations under the treaty in a number of ways, as per Articles II and IV of the Treaty:

It failed to ensure the independence of the Republic of Cyprus against foreign aggression.It failed to ensure the territorial integrity of the RoC. It allowed and continues to allow violation of the principle of the indivisibility of the territory of the Republic of Cyprus since 1974 and after (see Cyprus Constitution, Article 185)It further failed to act for the security of the RoC.It failed to secure the constutional order of the RoC.It blatantly failed to resist partition by military force of the RoC.It failed to act for the re-establishment of the constitutional order of the ROC.It failed to act in November 1983 against the declaration of separate “independence” in the occupied areas and failed to prevent a territorial division or activities tending to promote forcible division of the country.It failed to prevent further expansion of the Turkish troops in August 1974. The 3rd
Report of the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee in 1987 established in no uncertain terms that the extension of the initial invasion after the 14th
August 1974 “…was illegal both in terms of the 1960 Treaties and in terms of the UN Charter and general international law”.It failed to prevent the illegal violation of the demographic fabric of the people of the RoC through the illegal transfer of settlers by the occupant power, which it had also guaranteed as part of the constitutional order of the Republic of Cyprus.

No doubt both Cyprus and the UK consider the Treaty as binding and that it creates obligations under international law, which should be performed in good faith (Art. 26 of the VCLT – pacta sunt servanda).

It may be said by way of counter argument that in the meantime events have intervened that have brought about a fundamental change of the situation or even a waiver of the rights of the Republic of Cyprus under the Treaty. These events are the intervention of the S.C. and the acceptance by Cyprus of the intercommunal negotiations as a means of resolving the situation that was allowed to occur, among others, by the failure on the part of the U.K. to act, as described already. I believe that such an argument connot be sustained.

Any violation or failure to observe obligations under a valid treaty establishes responsibility of the state acting against it or failing to act in accordance with it. Such responsibility is actionable before the International Court of Justice, in accordance with Article 36 of its Statute, as it creates a dispute, provided, of course, that the states concerned have accepted the compulsory jurisdiction of the Court. I believe that the UK and Cyprus have done so. But I understand that the UK has revised once more its declaration on the compulsory jurisdiction of the ICJ excluding cases where a relevant application emanates from a member or a previous member of the Commonwealth (see latest declaration of 22 February 2017).

At the same time, however, an advisory opinion could be requested from the ICJ via the organs of the UN, i.e. the GA or the SC. Such an advisory opinion could cover the responsibilities of the UK (as well as those of Turkey) and could focus on questions such as the need to restore the constitutional order of the Republic, the illegal transfer of settlers and others. The fact that such advisory opinion has not so far been sought, may frustrate the success of such request before the ICJ.

Ministers should fully fix cuts to public health funding and put a premium on preventative care budgets, targeting resources and funding to parts of the country that would benefit most from immediate help, a new report from the think-tank Localis has recommended.

In a report entitled ‘Local Practice – long-term sustainability through place-based health’, Localis calls for the introduction of a Prevention Premium – modelled after the schools’ Pupil Premium – to support the joined-up delivery of public health in an area.

The Prevention Premium would be calculated on population factors such as unemployment rate, numbers of children in low-income families and percentage over-65s as well as lifestyle factors such as smoking, childhood obesity and physical inactivity in adults.

According to analysis undertaken by Localis, residents of Blackpool, Hull and North East Lincolnshire are the top three areas that would benefit most from a prevention premium, followed by four North East areas including Middlesbrough, South Tyneside, Hartlepool and Sunderland.

The report also calls for major local employers to have a bigger role in improving community health alongside pleas for better use of NHS data and property assets.

To fix a looming crisis in the healthcare labour market, the report recommends local authorities should work hand-in-hand with NHS Trusts in filling gaps for overseas health and care workers after-Brexit, and also urges an overhaul to how we recruit and retain UK born nursing and social care staff in areas where they are most needed.

Report co-author, Localis research officer, Zayn Qureshi, said: “This report stresses the need for individuals to take back control over their own health and shows what could be possible by taking a whole-place view - one focused on delivering better health outcomes at local level.

“Where we live, and the communities in which we grow up in shape who we become, and this has a profound effect on our continual health. We must, therefore, help communities to constantly improve their collective health through a radical emphasis on the preventative as a first line of defence.”

But funding needs to be restored to 2015 levels as a minimum.

Report recommendations:

1. We reiterate our call for local authorities to be given a coherent and comprehensive finance settlement that is fit for purpose. One that is set on longer cycles of ten years, which would facilitate long term planning of the prevention agenda.

2. In addition to the public health grant, upper tier local authorities should be provided with a Prevention Premium, modelled after the Pupil Premium grant for school funding, to help support the transition to public health delivery interlinked across all council functions and wider civil society actors and institutions. The premium would be calculated based on demographic factors, reflecting two pinch points for public health. On the one hand, the rate at which the population is ageing and on the other the prevalence of child poverty.

3. The new government should work toward releasing the Social Care Funding Green Paper at the earliest convenience, the paper should contain guidance on the joining-up of services to create holistic public health strategies as a form of preventative care.

4. The beneficial role Local Economic Anchors can play in tackling emerging public health challenges should be recognised by giving them a seat at the table on Health and Wellbeing Boards. This would lead to further collaboration between all local stakeholders including the local health and social care sector, local authorities and business.

5. Integrated Care Systems should be funded to employ health economists, to evaluate public health initiatives within a place and their effect on local NHS demand.

6. Roles should be created within Integrated Care Systems for marketing specialists, to work with local authorities within the ICS area to develop links between the NHS, the local community and the commercial healthcare and fitness sectors.

7. Constituent local authorities should be given a formalised role to act as conveners for Integrated Care Systems to actively engage with local educational institutions, to ensure a holistic, joined-up health education system, sensitive to local context, is in place.

8. CCG mergers should be halted and rolled back, with the aim of achieving parity with local government to ensure the legitimacy of locally-delivered healthcare.

9. Government, the NHS and local authorities must commit to greater collaborative working. Central to this, these partners must also sensitively and securely unlock greater potential from locally-derived patient data ‘the jewel in the health service crown’. This will mean funding to build robust systems for the effective storing, mining and analysis of larger databases including clinical and public health outcomes at appropriate sub-regional level. From this point forward, joint funding arrangements involving NHS England should be put in place, with the goal of analysing the success of health interventions across local public services.

10. In line with existing reforms to public property assets, efforts should be made by managers of the NHS estate to collocate different healthcare professionals from across the health service – e.g. GPs, nurses, pharmacists – in modern working environments within the community that support best patient care.

11. A joint nursing role that combines health and social care responsibilities should be created. This would accelerate steps toward delivering integrated care, give nurses a practical understanding of what this means, and offer concrete career prospects. For example, by employing individuals on a rotational basis whereby they work part time in the community, and part time in the acute setting, one would develop a range of skill sets, which would allow people more scope and opportunity regarding their career prospects.

12. A comprehensive immigration system that puts place-based needs first is essential post-Brexit. We propose a deal whereby visa quotas per sector are devolved to local government as they are best suited to know the needs for growth in their area. Local authorities in partnership with local NHS trusts are in a better position to identify their and recruit for themselves. Even outside of healthcare, local authorities can identify key sectors where immigration is needed and can fill gaps whilst creating incentives for people to take opportunities to train and work in their areas.

13. Efforts should be doubled to reverse the fall in numbers of nurses, GPs, and other health and social care professionals through a focus on increased homebased training. A start should be reversing the abolition of bursaries for nursing students. More institutions and places to study should be made available, with clear incentives laid out for training in specialities where there are current shortages. This should involve having clearly laid out opportunities for an upward career trajectory to boost morale.

14. Efforts should also be made to attract more young British people to work in social care, especially in areas which have experienced a brain drain and thus have a higher median age. This involves a necessary boost of investment into the social care budget, which would allow for raising wages, and creating new opportunities and prospects for social workers.

Saturday 7th September will see hundreds of women across the UK Riding to honour women murdered by men they knew

The Ride For Murdered Women – started in March 2017 when feminist activist, Jean Hatchet, was riding her bike in Yorkshire when she decided to begin a small personal tribute to women murdered by men they knew. That day she rode her bike for Katrina O Hara who was stabbed outside the shop she worked at by her husband. She could not ring the police as the police had confiscated her mobile phone when she reported her husband’s stalking behaviour. She was left helpless at the hands of the man she once loved and he took her life.

Jean decided not to stop. She continued riding for each woman murdered since January 2016. She has now ridden her bike for 276 murdered women. She has ridden more than 7000 miles in their honour. Each time she rides she posts on Twitter details of the woman’s name and how she died and the brutal pain that is left behind with the woman’s family and friends.

On 7th September 2019 at 1pm Jean has asked women to join her for just one ride to celebrate the lives of all the women she has ridden for so far. Women will ride across the UK and globally in small groups as an act of solidarity with Jean. Women are also riding in their bedrooms on exercise bikes. Women will use wheelchairs if they cannot ride a bike. Women are riding in London, Manchester, Cambridge, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Ireland, Canada, Australia, Denmark and other cities worldwide. They will wear red and each woman will carry the name of a woman murdered since 2016 by a man she knew. This is not an organised ride as such. It is simply women riding to show their love for women who have been cruelly stolen from the world by men. It is also to raise awareness of how many men kill women who are their former or current partners. It is a feminist act. The ride is women only.

Jean says,

“I didn’t realise when I started to do this how much it would affect me. Each time I ride I think of the woman and the cruel details of her murder. I push down hard on the pedals and think of the incredible pain and sense of betrayal and fear the woman felt as she died. Sometimes I cry as I cycle. Sometimes I cry when I get back. The words ‘domestic abuse” hide so much. The reality is often too much. But I feel these women with me as I ride, almost like I carry them on my back. I am determined they will not be forgotten.”

In doing this Jean has also raised more than £20,000 for Wearside Women In Need who operate women’s refuges in Sunderland.

Jean will be riding on Saturday in Central London alongside Karen Ingala Smith who is the CEO of Nia – a women’s organisation operating refuges for some of the most vulnerable women in the UK. Karen also runs ‘Counting Dead Women’ and she began the Femicide Census which records and analyses the deaths of women murdered by men. In July 2018 Jean was diagnosed with Stage 3C Ovarian cancer. With an uncertain prognosis she continues to ride her bike often in pain but always with love. In November 2018 Jean was a Special Prize winner of the Emma Humphreys Memorial Prize for her work in challenging male violence against women.

Jean would like the government and police to be more committed to keeping women alive.

“We need government to recognise that saying the words ‘domestic abuse’ and committing to “end it” covers up the details of the terrible work of these men and how deep rooted the hatred of women is in our society. The failures of the police are woven through the stories below. The police must pay attention when women point out these men. Many women who pointed can no longer point. They are dead.”
