Harlow, UK – 13th September 2019 – Haag-Streit Academy hosted a successful ‘Gold Standard’ Perimetry Course on 10th September 2019. The education event, held at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Leeds, was extremely well-received, with excellent feedback from delegates.

The ‘Gold Standard’ Perimetry Course provided attendees with expert advice and a detailed overview of how to get the most out of their perimeter. The day included lectures and demonstrations delivered by perimetry specialist Prof. Fiona Rowe, Professor in Orthoptics & Health Services at the University of Liverpool.

Professor Rowe covered topics including; ‘System & test set-up’, ‘Static & kinetic examination’, ‘Test evaluation cluster’ and ‘Polar & trend analysis’. Other members of the faculty delivered a series of talks on the practicalities of using the Haag-Streit Octopus 900, the true successor to the Goldmann perimeter. They shared practical advice on how to use the instrument to achieve superior results in both kinetic and static perimetry.

In addition, delegates participated in hands-on sessions and test simulations facilitated by the Haag-Streit Academy team. The one day programme offered 6 CPD points.

September 2019 – Horizon Technologies and the Satellite Applications Catapult have signed a memorandum of understanding with the National Maritime Information Centre (NMIC) to supply satellite data from their new IOD-3 AMBER satellite. This data will provide government end-users with crucial maritime information allowing law enforcement agencies to pinpoint and potentially intercept law breakers at sea.

Horizon Technologies already has a proven track record of working with national governments, international and regional organizations, and private industry. This partnership with NMIC will cement Horizon Technologies’ position as a leading supplier of maritime intelligence from satellites.

The satellite forms part of the Satellite Applications Catapult’s In-Orbit Demonstration programme (IOD), funded by Innovate UK, and combines three different types of data, including information from satellite phones, to help track marine vessels.

At present, all ships are fitted with Automatic Identification Signals (AIS), which can be detected by satellites, but AIS can be disabled to avoid detection when undertaking activities such as illegal fishing, piracy, smuggling, and transhipments. This new satellite will reduce the dependency on AIS by using other sources of data to provide location information.

The payload on board IOD-3 AMBER will be able to locate and track vessels worldwide by picking up their electronic emissions using an L-band Satphone detection sensor package derived from the existing FlyingFish™ system. This is combined with an AIS receiver and sensors to detect, geolocate, and classify X/S-band maritime radars, allowing correlation of these signals against the presence of AIS beacons.

The In-Orbit Demonstration programme is funded by Innovate UK and the UK Space Agency and offers satellite service providers a fast-track, low-cost opportunity to launch a satellite from the International Space Station in as little as 18 months. VIENNA, 19-20 September 2019 – Two United Nations agencies will join an international network of academics, civil society organisations and policymakers to host a workshop on automation, artificial intelligence, and premature de-industrialization.

The interdisciplinary workshop, co-hosted by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, the United Nations University and the Global Inequality Dynamics Research Network will investigate the future of industrial work, including threats posed to developing countries by emerging technologies and ‘premature de-industrialization’.

With sessions focusing on automation and globalization, jobs and development, as well as premature de-industrialization and structural transformation, the event will feature researchers from the Universities of Cambridge, Harvard and Johannesburg, as well as from the International Monetary Fund, the Overseas Development Institute and the World Trade Organization, among many others.

The workshop will open with a keynote speech from Margaret McMillan (Tufts University), followed by five subject-tailored sessions, and a policy panel chaired by Kunal Sen (UNU-WIDER). As such, more than 30 researchers from around the world will tackle the most pressing questions of the Fourth Industrial Revolution:

What is the impact of new technologies and ‘Industry 4.0’ on comparative advantage, industrial work and social and economic inclusiveness in developing countries?What are the distributional and political dynamics of new modes of structural change? And what public policies are plausible and appropriate?How are the manufacturing and service sectors interdependent? Does a strong manufacturing base support the growth of high-tech service industries? Can the growth of high-productivity service industries drive industrialization? What public policies are required to create synergies between manufacturing and service development for inclusive and sustainable growth?What would make traditional forms of structural transformation – industrialization – more viable in the future years? What public policies should be discussed and implemented?

The event will feature a number of practical outputs, including media interviews with high-level researchers and a series of policy briefs, set for release in late 2019. The agenda will cover Ultrasound Biomicroscopy (UBM), how to perform accurate axial length measurement using immersion ultrasound, opaque media and vitreoretinal disorders, intraocular tumours and the examination of the orbit & optic nerve.

Businesses can now donate their old tech at participating centers

Regus and SocialBox.Biz have forged a highly successful partnership that is helping homeless people get back on their feet. In celebration, a special donation day was held on August 15, 2019, and aimed to hit a milestone of 1000 laptops donated by 2020.

Local press, councilmen and councilwomen, politicians, and other community figures were welcome to come for a special donation day morning and coffee.

To date, Regus sites have received approximately 200 items including laptops, office telephones, network switches, servers, desktop computers, mobile telephones, and business attire.

“I’m glad this is up and running,” said Steve Adams, Councillor for Belsize, London Borough of Camden. “Any help that can be brought through this innovative social initiative is to be welcomed. Well done.”

The initiative to reach 1000 laptops by 2020 is on track to be a success; to date, 600 have been donated. Those who want to take part in helping reach the milestone include Regus clients, which include entrepreneurs, small businesses, consultants, and more, and the public is also invited to donate laptops, computers, old mobile devices, attire, and more. Before donating, donors are asked to remove private data from tech devices as this is a public event.

Donations are also being accepted at the SocialBox.Biz donation drop off location in the London Borough of Camden in central London ( Regus-Spaces, 77 Farrington, LB, Camden, London EC1M 3JU ).
